This is one of the largest cels we own. Originally the legs were painted pink and white, but a correction cel was added to make her legs skin-tone. The shadow at Miruru's feet is airbrushed. It is cropped in our scan. The cel is in good condition except for 2 minor dents near an edge far from the image and a slight fading of part of a line on her legs.

In Step 7, the Squid Noelle episode, Miruru, disguised as "the new maid Miyoko" (her ears and tail hidden), suddenly surprises Yuusuke when he is in the bath. While originally we thought that this cel was used in this episode, we now believe that it was supposed to be used, but then another pan cel was substituted. In the scene, Miruru faces the viewer, unlike this cel in which she is slightly turned to the side. When Miruru first enters the room behind the unsuspecting Yuusuke, only her feet and the shadow below them show, and these feet are posed exactly the way they are in this cel and the shadow below matches the cel's airbrushing. Perhaps the plan was to go from that shot (see screeencap) to a pan up the figure. Instead, the animators cut to a close-up of Yuusuke, then did a closer pan-up with another cel.

This is just another one of those mysteries that keep cropping up with the production art for this series. There are many cels from TnN that were painted but unused. Often they are marked with studio seals and have studio douga sheets, but somewhere along the way, they were put aside and other cels substituted. In the case of this scene, it seems that the final way it was shot made more sense both visually and logistically. For example, the original background for the scene had to be HUGE! (See our giant pan cel from A Tree of Palme for an example). The new pan cel, rather than showing a third-person view of Miruru, showed Yuusuke's view of her, which allows the viewer to imagine being put in Yuusuke's awkward situation.

While ultimately not used in production, no one would deny that this cel possesses all the charms of the best TnN art.
